Cable Tensile Testing After Ageing

Reliable Quality from Raw Materials to F

At the FRCABLE Cable Test Lab, tensile testing after ageing is used to evaluate whether cable insulation and sheath materials can maintain their mechanical properties after accelerated environmental exposure.

Ageing Process Before Tensile Testing

Before mechanical testing, cable insulation or sheath specimens are subjected to controlled ageing procedures.

Depending on the applicable requirement, ageing may include:

Thermal Ageing

Samples are exposed to elevated temperatures for a specified period to simulate long-term heat exposure.

UV Weathering

Specimens are exposed to controlled ultraviolet radiation and moisture cycles to evaluate outdoor ageing effects.

Other Environmental Conditioning

Additional conditioning may be applied according to the cable standard or customer specification.

After ageing, specimens are prepared for tensile testing.

Cable Tensile Testing After Ageing

Tensile Test After Environmental Exposure

Following ageing treatment, the cable material samples are placed in a tensile testing machine.

The equipment applies a controlled pulling force until the specimen reaches failure.

During the test, the system records:

Tensile Strength

The maximum force that the aged material can withstand before breaking.

Elongation at Break

The percentage increase in length before the specimen fails.

The results are compared with the original mechanical properties measured before ageing.

Material Performance Evaluation

The key objective of post-ageing tensile testing is not only the absolute tensile value, but the ability of the material to maintain performance after environmental stress.

Testing evaluates:

Strength Retention

Whether the insulation or sheath maintains sufficient mechanical strength after ageing.

Flexibility Retention

Whether the material remains capable of stretching without premature cracking or failure.

Ageing Resistance

Whether the polymer compound can withstand simulated long-term operating conditions.

Importance for Photovoltaic Cables

Solar cables are expected to operate outdoors for many years, often under continuous exposure to temperature changes and solar radiation.

Maintaining mechanical properties after ageing helps ensure:

  • Long-term insulation protection

  • Sheath durability

  • Resistance to installation stress

  • Reduced risk of cracking or material failure

For photovoltaic systems, mechanical ageing resistance is an important factor affecting cable service reliability.
