RoHS Requirements for Cable Materials

RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) limits the use of specific hazardous materials in electrical and electronic products.


For cable products, restricted substances may be present in:

  • Polymer insulation materials

  • Outer sheath compounds

  • Plastic additives

  • Metal coatings

  • Other non-metallic components

RoHS Compliance Testing

RoHS Screening Method

The initial screening of cable materials is commonly performed using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis.

During XRF testing, the sample surface is exposed to X-ray radiation. The interaction between the X-rays and elements within the material produces characteristic signals that can be analysed to identify the presence and concentration of specific elements.


XRF screening provides rapid material composition information without damaging the tested sample.

Cable Material Sampling

Depending on the cable construction, different components may be evaluated separately.

Typical test samples may include:


Outer Sheath Material

Verification of polymer compounds used for external protection.


Insulation Material

Assessment of insulation compounds used around the conductor.


Metallic Components

Analysis of conductor coatings or other metal-related components where applicable.


Testing different material sections helps provide a more complete understanding of cable composition.

Restricted Substances Evaluated

RoHS compliance verification commonly evaluates restricted substances including:


Lead (Pb)

Restricted due to its environmental and health impact.


Mercury (Hg)

Controlled because of its toxicity and environmental persistence.


Cadmium (Cd)

Subject to a stricter maximum concentration limit than most other restricted substances.


Hexavalent Chromium (Cr VI)

Restricted due to its hazardous properties.


Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB)

A restricted flame-retardant substance group.


Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE)

Restricted brominated flame-retardant substances.


Phthalates

Including DEHP, BBP, DBP and DIBP, which are controlled under RoHS 3 requirements.
