UV Accelerated Weathering Testing

Reliable Quality from Raw Materials to F

At the FRCABLE Cable Test Lab, controlled UV exposure is used as part of our quality verification process for solar and photovoltaic cables.

How UV Weathering Testing Works

During accelerated weathering testing, cable material samples are exposed to repeated cycles of ultraviolet light, moisture and controlled temperature.

These laboratory conditions accelerate the effects that outdoor exposure can have on polymer materials, allowing changes in material properties to be evaluated within a controlled test environment.

Accelerated testing does not directly represent a specific number of years of outdoor service. Instead, it provides a standardized method for comparing material performance before and after UV and moisture exposure.

Why-UV-Resistance-Matters

What We Evaluate

After weathering exposure, cable sheath materials can be evaluated for changes in key mechanical and physical properties.

Tensile Strength

Measures whether the sheath material maintains sufficient mechanical strength following UV exposure.

Elongation at Break

Evaluates the flexibility and ability of the material to stretch after accelerated weathering.

Surface Condition

The cable material can also be inspected for visible deterioration or other changes caused by prolonged UV and moisture exposure.

UV Testing for Solar Cables

UV resistance is especially important for photovoltaic cables installed outdoors, where cables may remain exposed to sunlight for extended periods.

For H1Z2Z2-K solar cables manufactured according to EN 50618, weathering and UV resistance testing forms part of the performance verification requirements.

Under EN 50618, sheath samples are subjected to UV and water exposure for 720 hours (360 cycles). Mechanical properties are then compared with unexposed samples to evaluate material retention after weathering.

Testing can also support photovoltaic cables manufactured according to IEC 62930 and applicable customer specifications.

Why UV Resistance Matters

Adequate UV resistance helps the cable sheath maintain its mechanical properties during long-term outdoor installation.

For solar projects, this contributes to:

  • Long-term outdoor performance

  • Resistance to sunlight exposure

  • Sheath durability

  • Reliable cable performance

  • Consistent PV system operation
