Oil Resistance of Cable Sheath Materials
The outer sheath of a solar cable provides mechanical protection and environmental resistance for the internal insulation and conductor.
When exposed to oil-based substances, certain polymer materials may experience:
Swelling
Softening
Loss of mechanical strength
Reduced flexibility
Changes in surface condition
Oil immersion testing evaluates whether the sheath compound can maintain stable physical properties after contact with mineral oil.

Test Principle
Oil immersion testing is performed by exposing prepared sheath specimens to a controlled mineral oil environment.
The test method follows the principles of IEC 60811-404, which specifies mineral oil immersion testing for cable sheathing materials, particularly cross-linked compounds.
The test evaluates the change in mechanical properties before and after oil exposure.
Test Procedure
Specimen Preparation
Test specimens are prepared from the cable sheath material.
The samples are measured and conditioned before oil exposure to establish the original mechanical properties.
Mineral Oil Immersion
Prepared specimens are immersed in a specified mineral oil under controlled temperature conditions.
The exposure period and temperature are selected according to the applicable cable requirement.
During immersion, the oil may penetrate the polymer structure and interact with the sheath material.
Post-Immersion Conditioning
After completion of the immersion period, specimens are removed from the oil and prepared for further evaluation.
Excess oil is removed, and the samples are conditioned before mechanical testing.
Mechanical Property Evaluation
After oil exposure, tensile testing is performed to compare the mechanical properties of oil-aged samples with untreated reference samples.
The evaluation may include:
Tensile strength retention
Elongation retention
Material appearance changes
