Low-Temperature Flexibility of Solar Cable Materials

Polymer materials can become harder and less flexible when exposed to cold temperatures.

For photovoltaic cables installed in cold regions, reduced flexibility may increase the risk of:

  • Insulation cracking

  • Sheath damage

  • Installation difficulties

  • Long-term reliability issues

Cold bend testing evaluates whether the cable construction can withstand bending stress while maintaining material integrity.

Cable Cold Bend Testing

Cold Bend Test Principle

The test evaluates the ability of cable insulation and sheath materials to bend under controlled low-temperature conditions.


A prepared cable sample is cooled inside a temperature-controlled chamber until it reaches the specified test temperature.


After conditioning, the sample is bent around a defined mandrel with a specified diameter.


The bent specimen is then inspected to determine whether visible cracks or damage have occurred.


The test method follows the principles described in IEC 60811-504, which specifies low-temperature bending tests for cable insulation and sheathing materials.

Test Procedure

Sample Preparation

A section of cable or prepared insulation/sheath specimen is selected according to the applicable test requirement.

The sample dimensions and preparation method depend on the cable construction and standard being evaluated.


Low-Temperature Conditioning

The specimen is placed inside a low-temperature chamber and conditioned at the required temperature.

The cooling process ensures that the polymer material reaches the required test condition before bending.


Mandrel Bending

After temperature conditioning, the cable sample is bent around a mandrel with controlled diameter.

The bending process applies mechanical stress similar to the conditions experienced during cable installation in cold environments.


Visual Inspection

After bending, the sample is examined for visible damage.

The insulation and sheath surfaces are checked for:

  • Cracks

  • Splitting

  • Surface damage

  • Loss of mechanical integrity
