Vertical Flame Testing for Solar Cables

At the FRCABLE Cable Test Lab, vertical flame testing is used to evaluate the resistance of solar cables to flame propagation when exposed to a controlled ignition source.

Purpose of Vertical Flame Testing

During a fire event, cables may contribute to flame propagation if their insulation or sheath materials continue burning.


Vertical flame testing evaluates the fire behaviour of a single cable installed in a vertical position under controlled laboratory conditions.


The test helps assess:

  • Flame propagation resistance

  • Self-extinguishing capability

  • Extent of damage after burning

  • Performance consistency of cable materials

Test Evaluation Criteria

After testing, the cable sample is inspected based on several key criteria.


Flame Extinguishing Performance

The cable should stop burning within the specified time after removal of the ignition source.


Flame Propagation Distance

The damaged or carbonized area must remain within the permitted limit defined by the applicable standard.


Cable Damage Assessment

The burned section is examined to evaluate whether the insulation and sheath materials meet the required flame resistance performance.

Vertical Flame Test Conditions

For single cable vertical flame propagation testing according to IEC 60332-1-2, typical test conditions include:


Test Sample

A section of finished cable mounted vertically in the test chamber.


Flame Source

A 1 kW premixed flame applied according to the specified test procedure.


Inspection

After flame application, the cable is checked for flame spread and the extent of carbonization.


The required flame application duration depends on the outside diameter of the cable sample.

Flame Testing for Solar Cables
