Mechanical Performance of Solar Cable Materials

Solar cable insulation and sheath materials are exposed to various mechanical stresses during manufacturing, transportation, installation and long-term outdoor operation.


Materials used for photovoltaic cables must maintain sufficient strength while also providing flexibility for installation.

Two important mechanical characteristics are evaluated:


Tensile Strength

Tensile strength represents the maximum force a material can withstand before rupture.

It indicates the mechanical resistance of the insulation or sheath compound under stretching forces.


Elongation at Break

Elongation at break represents the percentage increase in length of the specimen before it breaks.

A higher elongation value generally indicates better flexibility and deformation capability of the material.

Tensile & Elongation Measurement for Cable Insulation Materials

Test Method

Tensile and elongation testing is performed on prepared specimens taken from the cable insulation or outer sheath.

The testing process includes several controlled steps:


Specimen Preparation

The insulation or sheath is removed from the cable and prepared into standardized test pieces.

The specimen dimensions are measured before testing to ensure accurate calculation of mechanical properties.


Tensile Loading

The prepared specimen is installed in a tensile testing machine.

The machine applies a controlled pulling force until the specimen breaks.

During the test, the applied force and the change in specimen length are continuously recorded.


Result Calculation

The test system calculates:

  • Maximum tensile force

  • Tensile strength

  • Elongation percentage at break

The results are then compared with the requirements of the applicable cable standard.

Evaluation of Cable Material Performance

The measured tensile strength and elongation values provide information about the condition and quality of the polymer compound.

Testing helps verify:


Material Strength

Confirms that insulation and sheath materials can withstand mechanical forces during cable handling and installation.


Material Flexibility

Evaluates whether the polymer compound maintains sufficient stretchability without premature failure.


Production Consistency

Helps monitor material formulation and manufacturing stability between production batches.
