Electrical Insulation Performance of Solar Cables

The insulation layer of a solar cable is designed to prevent current leakage and maintain electrical separation between the conductor and surrounding materials.


For photovoltaic cables, reliable insulation performance is essential because cables operate under continuous DC voltage exposure and outdoor environmental conditions.


Insulation resistance testing evaluates the ability of the insulation material to resist the flow of unwanted electrical current.


Higher insulation resistance generally indicates better insulation integrity and lower leakage current.

Cable Insulation Resistance Testing

Test Principle

Insulation resistance testing measures the electrical resistance between the conductor and the insulation layer under a specified DC voltage.


A high-voltage DC measuring instrument, commonly known as an insulation resistance tester or megohmmeter, applies a controlled test voltage to the cable sample.


The resulting leakage current flowing through the insulation is measured, and the insulation resistance value is calculated.


The final result is usually expressed as:

MΩ·km (Megaohm-kilometre)

or

depending on the cable specification and test method.

Testing Procedure

Sample Preparation

A finished cable sample is prepared by exposing the conductor ends while keeping the insulation layer intact.

The sample is conditioned according to the applicable testing requirements before measurement.


DC Voltage Application

A specified DC voltage is applied between the conductor and the insulation system.

For multi-core cables, measurements may also be performed between conductors or between conductor and screen where applicable.


Resistance Measurement

The instrument records the leakage current response and calculates the insulation resistance value.

The measured value is then compared with the minimum requirement specified by the applicable cable standard.

Factors Affecting Insulation Resistance

Insulation resistance values can be influenced by several factors, including:


Material Quality

The electrical properties of XLPO, XLPE or other insulation compounds directly affect resistance performance.


Temperature

Insulation resistance decreases as temperature increases, therefore test conditions must be controlled or corrected according to the applicable procedure.


Moisture Exposure

Water absorption or contamination can reduce insulation resistance and increase leakage current.


Cable Construction

Insulation thickness, defects, surface condition and manufacturing consistency can influence electrical performance.
